Memorial 365

Project Type

Drawing, drawing-performance

Date

2021

Where

Toride, Japan

Memorial 365 was born when, while studying in Japan, I was receiving daily images on my phone of people being beheaded and massacred in Beni. Although I lived several thousand kilometres away, I felt permanently connected to my country, not only through my origins or the Internet, but also through my body. So, for 365 days, I made 365 drawings showing 365 different fragments of my body, to which I associated 365 names (out of several thousand) of the people killed in Beni since 2014.
This gesture is in fact a process of memorising or remembering the names of these victims on my fragmented, cut-up body. It is also a process of meditation and reflection on the deconstruction, erasure and elimination of the memory carried by the body. It is also a process of reflection on the time of connection, of contact spent between the victim and his executioner, and on the kind of exchange of memory that took place before, during and after the execution.
